This Is My Voice

Speaking, writing, listening, and body language are various forms of communication. It helps to form relationships and express oneself in the world. Sometimes people struggle with different forms of communication. When people struggle to communicate there is help available as a software application on tablets and laptops known as Augmentative and Alternative Communication. AAC encompasses a wide range of nonverbal communication methods including sign language, picture boards, and speech-generating devices. This software captures all the things that support communication when someone cannot always rely on their natural speech or language skills to express themselves. This can include touch screen control, tracking eye and head movements, and switch controls. The goal is to enhance the communication of individuals with complex communication needs so that they can enjoy full expression. Chelsea Hagen uses a high tech AAC communication device and she passionately shares a beautiful poem on how important her AAC has been in helping her reach to new heights and live a fuller life.

“This is my voice

It is a musical chime for all to hear

Without it

I would be muffled and unclear

This is my voice

Heard, like the lion, I want to be

Without it

Silent venom, will consume me

This is my voice

Inside, my thoughts dance with gladness

Without it

I have a tear-streaked face full of sadness

This is my voice

My AAC device is part of my creative soul

Without it

I have no intelligence to show

So, respect my AAC device

It is an important part of me

Without it

The real me, you will never see.”

Thank you, Chelsea, for sharing your voice!
